Hamburger Steak (Japanese Style) [Cooking]

Hamburger Steak Source: Fruits Basket

Today, I present to you a recipe for hamburger steak — a dish that loosely resembles Salisbury steak but with a Japanese twist. It might seem a bit tricky to prepare, but I’ve detailed all the steps and precise measurements.

For authenticity, it's recommended to top the hambagu steak with a sunny side up egg and serve it with rice or stewed vegetables (carrots, new potatoes, broccoli) as a side dish.

Prep & cook time: 1-1.5 hr

Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • 1 small onion
  • 2 slices of toast bread
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 400g pork-beef mince
  • Garlic powder
  • Smoked paprika
  • Piece of butter
  • Couple tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup broth
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1/4 cup apple juice
  • 1 tsp potato starch
  • Salt
  • Pepper

Directions

Chop half an onion and sauté until golden.

In a bowl, soak 2 slices of toast bread in a little bit of milk for a few minutes.

In the same bowl, combine one package of ground pork and beef mix, one egg, minced garlic, ground pepper, smoked paprika, salt, and any other spices to taste. Add the cooled onions.

Mix everything thoroughly. Divide the mixture into 4 portions and form flat patties.

Heat some oil in a pan and fry the patties, flipping them occasionally, for about 20 minutes until golden brown. Then, place the patties on a separate plate.

For the Sauce

In the same pan, add a couple of tablespoons of butter, half a cup of broth (made from half a bouillon cube), one tablespoon of ketchup, and 1/4 cup of apple juice.

Stir everything together until smooth and heat over medium heat.

Add the patties back to the pan with the sauce and simmer for about 10 minutes, or until the sauce thickens. The sauce should become thick and dark, like syrup.
